Breeders Awards
Breeders are awarded points for animals bred by them who attain certain awards and qualifications. In order to achieve a Bronze Medal, 50 points are required, Silver 100 points, Gold 200, Platinum 500, Diamond 1000, Double Diamond 2000, Triple Diamond 3000 points and so on.
Grehenheim was the first kennel to achieve a Diamond Breeder's Medal in 1999. Grehenheim is to date the only kennel to have achieved a Double Diamond award (2011) and has already qualified for a Triple Diamond which will be awarded at the GSD Federation National Show on 30 April 2015.
Kennel Group Competition
The Kennel Group Competition is designed to measure a breeder's success in breeding quality and type true to their kennel while simultaneously maintaining the largest genetic variation possible.
An ideal group would be: a group consisting of 5 dogs including males and bitches, from 5 different litters, 5 different dams and 5 different sires. This would represent the highest possible genetic variety.
The individual dogs should then all receive the highest possible gradings and placings for their ages and should all look like peas in a pod!
It is unlikely that a breeder who presents a group of 5 dogs from only 2 litters, 2 sires and 2 dams or a group of 5 dogs that all look completely different or achieve poor gradings would win the competition.
Grehenheim has won the National Kennel Group 13 times
out of 17 competitions entered, 10 of which were consecutive.
The VA(SA) Grading
Because of the relative ease with which a dog can gain a "Champion" title in the Kennel Union of South Africa, and the fact that such a title does not necessarily indicate that the dog is of high quality, the German Shepherd Dog Federation of South Africa does not award the title.
Instead, the organisation follows the SV/WUSV recommended grading system and calls its champions (which must win a class at the annual National Breed Show), "Sieger" for males and "Siegerin" for females. "Sieger" means "Champion" in German.
The highest grading a dog can be awarded in South Africa is the VA(SA) or "Excellent Select" grading awarded only at the National Show.
The grading is awarded only to the very best dogs over 24 months of age which conform to the following:
- Males and females must have passed a Federation recognised HD scheme
- Males and females must be Breed Surveyed
- Males and females must have passed the courage test with TSB "pronounced"
The kennel has bred seven VA(SA)'s
